Homeless animals outnumber homeless people 5 to 1. It is crazy to think that there are that many homeless animals out on the streets. But it is even crazier to me as to how that many animals got there in the first place.
I cannot imagine letting my dog out of the house and not giving a crap what happened to it. Often people don’t have the means to take care of their dog so they just let it out and hope it finds a new home. These people just may be the dumbest people to inhabit the earth. This is why dumbasses shouldn’t be allowed to have a dog.
I realize shelters don’t always have the resources to go and check up on a dog’s wellbeing after it has been adopted. This would be the most effective way to ensure a dog is settling in to its new home but of course it is not the easiest task. A possibly simpler solution might be to bring the potential dog out to the house of the potential owner. When I first adopted Dixie and ChiChi the shelter owner personally came out to our house to make sure they got along with Rosie; as well as to make sure our home was suitable. I understand you can’t legally deny someone from adopting or owning a dog but say there would’ve been something fishy about my house. Maybe there were chicken wire crates in the back yard or chains. That shelter owner could’ve suspected something and then went to get higher authority involved. One trip out to someone’s house may not save every dog from becoming homeless but it is a start.
Also people need to realize that even though it’s not the most ideal situation, if you have to get rid of your dog just drop it off at a local shelter. No shelter has ever left a dog out on the street to fend for itself. Matter of fact most shelters gain a lot of their dogs because of people dropping their unwanted dogs off. It’s not idyllic for the shelter because they want to make room for dogs that are on “doggy death row” but if that’s what it takes to keep a dog off the street then they will take it.
